ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Resilient Roots: Climate Leaders Network is a climate education program led by Greenbelt Alliance and Sustainable Solano that will equip a pilot cohort of Suisun City and Fairfield residents with the inspiration and resources to champion climate action in their own communities. Throughout the 10 month course beginning in September 2024, participants will engage in skill-building workshops and field trips throughout the region, dedicating approximately 5 hours per month to the program. The curriculum will hone local expertise to develop an understanding of interconnected climate challenges, planning and policy development skills, and the tools for participants to lead local action and grow their climate leadership in their own communities!
This project will meaningfully address gaps in public awareness and capacity by supporting residents in becoming advocates and bringing their own expertise into all types of planning, restoration, and development projects and policies.
Resilient Roots will culminate in a fun-filled, impactful showcase event to celebrate the work of the program participants and launch a digital resource for other communities to learn from our findings.

Willa Gruver
Willa grew up exploring and falling in love with California’s natural beauty, raising chickens, rabbits and quail, and selling vegetables at her local farmer’s market. While earning her B.A. in Environmental Studies at Carleton College, she facilitated community-building and environmental education on campus as a member and house manager of a Sustainable Living Interest House Co-op.
She further honed her community-building skills while working in event planning and people operations at GiveWell, and developed an interest in sustainable city planning through UC Berkeley’s [IN]City program. She believes that creating connected, engaged communities is a crucial component of forming and upholding systems of care for people and the planet.
As a Resilient Communities Program Manager with Sustainable Solano, Willa focuses on building community connections and facilitating community-led conversation, education and action.
Outside of work she can often be found befriending neighborhood cats, roller skating in the park and singing.
Alex Lunine
As a Sustainable Solano Resilient Communities Program Manager, Alex works with Solano communities to bolster their ability to prepare, adapt and respond to environmental hazards.
While getting his bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Environmental Studies, Alex conducted research on the impacts of urban stream syndrome and worked with the state of Maryland to assess the climate resiliency of coastal counties. He is excited to leave his work behind a desk to directly collaborate with Solano residents to ensure a green and thriving future.
